Shimoga: Police have arrested two youths who attempted to smuggle ganja and cigarettes into the Shivamogga Central Prison by concealing them inside a biscuit packet meant for an undertrial inmate. The arrested have been identified as Rahil (19) and Tasirulla (19), both residents of Bhadravathi.
According to police, the duo visited the central jail on Friday to meet undertrial prisoner Mohammed Gouse alias “Jangli.” As per jail protocol, they were carrying a biscuit packet to hand over to the inmates after producing their Aadhaar cards. However, their suspicious behavior drew the attention of Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KSISF) personnel in charge of prison security.
Upon inspection, officers found three black-taped objects hidden inside the biscuit packet. Further examination revealed one packet of ganja and two cigarette packets concealed inside.
The security staff immediately detained the duo and informed the jail superintendent Dr. P. Ranganath, who later handed them over to the Tunga Nagar Police. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The accused were produced before the magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.
In a related development, the Sagar Town Police secured a conviction in another ganja case. The District and Sessions Court sentenced two men—Imran (25) and Imtiyaz (28)—from Sagar to three years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25,000 each for selling ganja.
In 2021, police led by Inspector Ashok Kumar raided the Sadguru Layout area based on a tip-off and seized 1.6 kg of dry ganja, rs 800 in cash, and a Maruti Omni van. After investigation and submission of a charge sheet by PSI Sagar Kar, the court found the duo guilty. Judge Manjunath Nayak delivered the verdict, with public prosecutor Suresh Kumar representing the state.
