A deadly stampede occurred at a political rally led by actor-turned-politician Vijay (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam – TVK) in Karur, Tamil Nadu on Saturday evening, September 27, 2025.

According to officials, 39 people have been confirmed dead, with many more injured. The deceased include women and children. Multiple factors are reported to have contributed to the tragedy, which is now under investigation by a government-appointed Commission of Inquiry.

The crowd size, estimated to be up to 27,000-30,000, significantly exceeded the organizer’s estimate of 10,000. The rally was scheduled for a later time, but the party’s social media had announced Vijay’s arrival around noon. The actor, however, arrived much later, around 7:40 PM, causing the massive crowd to wait for hours in the heat without adequate food or water.

The stampede reportedly began around 7:30 PM-7:45 PM after a crowd surge as Vijay started his speech. Some witnesses also reported that people who had climbed a tree fell onto the tightly packed crowd, and a power cut also sparked panic and chaos.

Tamil Nadu police officials noted that the delayed arrival caused an uncontrollable surge of supporters, and the initial police deployment was not scaled up to handle the unexpected turnout.
