The initial reports and the statement from Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian confirmed that over 30 people were dead and approximately 40 to 50 people were injured serious and under treatment. Some initial reports suggested the death toll might rise and some reports feared it could be as high as over 36.
The incident occurred due to an uncontrollable surge and overcrowding at the rally, leading to a stampede-like situation where several attendees, including children, fainted and collapsed.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin directed officials and ministers, including the Health Minister, to oversee the immediate medical assistance for the injured. Vijay, the TVK chief, also reportedly paused his speech to help manage the situation and distribute water.
