What is a partial solar eclipse?
A partial solar eclipse happens when the Moon partially covers the Sun, making it look like the Sun has a bite taken out of it.
How It Occurs:
This type of eclipse occurs when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are not perfectly aligned. Instead of the Moon passing directly in front of the Sun, its path is slightly above or below the center. Because of this imperfect alignment, the Moon’s shadow, known as the penumbra, is cast on Earth, but the darker, central part of its shadow (umbra) misses Earth entirely.
Appearance:
During a partial solar eclipse, the amount of the Sun that is covered by the Moon can vary. It might look like just a tiny sliver is missing, or it could be a much larger portion. The key characteristic is that the Sun is never fully blocked out.
It’s crucial to remember that you should never look directly at a partial solar eclipse without proper eye protection, like certified eclipse glasses. Even with a large portion of the Sun covered, the remaining sunlight is intense and can cause serious eye damage.
