Key points about the upcoming caste census in Karnataka:
Dates: September 22 to October 7, 2025.
Duration: 15 days.
Scope: To cover all 7 crore people in Karnataka.
The survey will be conducted using a mobile application (app), aiming for a more scientific and transparent process compared to the manual method used in the previous 2015 survey. Approximately 1.65 lakh enumerators, including teachers and employees from various government departments, will be involved.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has stated that the survey’s main objective is to address caste discrimination and that its findings will be crucial for preparing the next state budget and informing policy decisions related to social justice and reservation. It will include economic conditions, land, and property holdings of every person.
Previous Survey: This new survey comes after the government decided to set aside the report of the first survey conducted in 2015 by the H. Kantharaj commission, which was submitted in 2024. The previous survey faced criticism regarding its accuracy and methodology, and its findings were “leaked” but never officially released.
Monitoring: A high-power committee will be set up to monitor the survey work, especially in Bengaluru, where the previous survey faced challenges.
The new survey is expected to have more questions than the 54 questions asked in the 2015 survey. A technical committee will finalize the questions to ensure scientific rigor. This move by the Karnataka government is significant and is expected to have considerable political and social implications in the state.
