Indian Railways has indeed implemented a fare hike across various travel classes, effective July 1, 2025.

This marks the first fare revision in five years and is aimed at improving the financial sustainability of the railway network.

Fare Increases from July 1, 2025:

General Fare Hike: Indian Railways has rationalized basic passenger fares, marking the first fare revision in five years. The aim is to bolster financial viability and manage rising operational costs.

Varying Increases: The fare increase varies depending on the class of travel and distance.

Ordinary Non-AC (Non-suburban) Trains:

Second Class: No increase for distances up to 500 km. Beyond that, there’s an increase of Rs 5 for 501-1500 km, Rs 10 for 1501-2500 km, and Rs 15 for 2501-3000 km.

Sleeper Class and First Class: Increased by 0.5 paisa per kilometer.

Mail/Express Trains (Non-AC):

Second Class, Sleeper Class, and First Class: Increased by 1 paisa per kilometer.
AC Classes (Mail/Express, including premium trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Vande Bharat, etc.): Increased by 2 paisa per kilometer.

No Change in Some Fares:

Suburban single journey fares and season tickets (both suburban and non-suburban) remain unchanged.

Reservation fees, superfast surcharges, and other ancillary charges also remain the same.
Applicability: The revised fares apply to tickets booked on or after July 1, 2025. Tickets issued before this date will remain valid at the existing fare.

Mandatory Aadhaar for Tatkal Ticket Booking:

Aadhaar Authentication for Online Bookings: From July 1, 2025, Tatkal tickets booked online via the IRCTC website and mobile app will require users to be Aadhaar-authenticated.

OTP-Based Authentication: By July 15, 2025, Aadhaar-based OTP (One-Time Password) authentication will become mandatory for all Tatkal bookings, including those made through Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and authorized railway agents.

The OTP will be sent to the mobile number linked with the Aadhaar for online bookings, and to the number provided in the reservation form for counter bookings.

Agent Restrictions: To curb misuse and bulk bookings, authorized Indian Railways ticketing agents are now barred from booking opening-day Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window (10:00 AM to 10:30 AM for AC classes, and 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM for non-AC classes).

Purpose: These measures are aimed at promoting fair and transparent access to Tatkal tickets and ensuring that the benefits reach genuine passengers. Users are encouraged to link their Aadhaar to their IRCTC profiles for seamless booking.

These changes are part of Indian Railways’ efforts to rationalize fares, enhance revenue, and streamline the ticketing process by leveraging technology and authentication mechanisms.
