Aadhaar linking mandatory for Tatkal ticket bookings on IRCTC

Aadhaar linking mandatory: Yes, Aadhaar linking is becoming mandatory for Tatkal ticket bookings on IRCTC. This is a significant change being implemented by Indian Railways to curb misuse, prevent fraud by touts, and ensure genuine passengers have better access to Tatkal tickets.

Here’s a breakdown of the new rules and timelines:

From July 1, 2025:

Aadhaar verification will be mandatory for all users booking Tatkal tickets online through the IRCTC website or mobile app. This means you will not be able to proceed with Tatkal booking unless your IRCTC account has been linked with your Aadhaar and verified.

Only users who have successfully authenticated their IRCTC account with their Aadhaar number will be eligible to book Tatkal tickets.

From July 15, 2025 (additional measure):

Even for Aadhaar-authenticated users, an additional OTP-based authentication will be required for every Tatkal booking. This OTP will be sent to the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar.

This OTP verification will also apply to Tatkal tickets booked at computerized PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counters and through authorized railway agents.
Why these changes?

The Ministry of Railways is implementing these changes to:

Combat fraud and misuse: Prevent unauthorized agents and bots from cornering Tatkal tickets.

Ensure equitable access: Make tickets more available for genuine last-minute travelers.
Enhance transparency and security: Align with the “Digital India” initiative and improve e-governance in public services.

What you need to do:

Link your Aadhaar with your IRCTC account: If you haven’t already, log in to your IRCTC account and link your Aadhaar. This typically involves going to “My Account” and selecting “Authenticate User” or “Aadhaar KYC,” entering your Aadhaar number, and verifying with an OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.

Ensure your mobile number is updated with Aadhaar: The OTP for booking will be sent to the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar. Make sure it’s current.

Pre-add Aadhaar-verified passengers to your Master List: On IRCTC, you can add passenger details to a “Master List.” For Tatkal bookings, ensure these details are Aadhaar-verified. This will help auto-fill details and speed up the booking process.

Be aware of agent restrictions: Authorized agents will be restricted from booking Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window (10:00 AM – 10:30 AM for AC classes, and 11:00 AM – 11:30 AM for non-AC classes).

In essence, if you plan to book Tatkal tickets from July 2025 onwards, ensure your IRCTC account is Aadhaar-linked and you have access to the mobile number associated with your Aadhaar for OTP verification.
