Gruha Jyothi Re Verification Leaves 45.78 Lakh Beneficiaries Pending In Karnataka

The Karnataka government is carrying out a large scale re verification of beneficiaries under the Gruha Jyothi scheme, with the exercise aimed at checking eligibility and identifying possible cases where the benefit may have been wrongly claimed.

The verification process began on July 1 and is scheduled to continue until September 30. According to the latest figures, around 1.19 crore beneficiaries have already been checked, accounting for nearly 72 percent of the total beneficiaries covered by the scheme.

However, the process is still incomplete for a significant number of households. Around 45.78 lakh beneficiaries remain pending for verification across the states five electricity supply companies.

The Gruha Jyothi scheme is one of the major guarantee programmes introduced by the Karnataka government. The re verification exercise is being conducted to ensure that the free electricity benefit continues to reach households that meet the required conditions.

Electricity supply company employees have been visiting beneficiaries at their homes to collect and verify the required information. Meter readers are among the personnel involved in the field level exercise, with repeated visits being made in cases where information has not yet been collected.

Officials are now paying attention to households that have not responded to the verification process. Electricity supply companies are reportedly preparing separate lists of beneficiaries who have not cooperated with the verification exercise. These details are expected to be submitted to the government for further action.

One of the concerns emerging during the exercise is that some beneficiaries may be reluctant to provide information because they fear losing the free electricity benefit. This hesitation could make it more difficult for officials to complete the exercise within the September 30 deadline.

The government has not said that every beneficiary who has not yet completed verification will automatically lose the Gruha Jyothi benefit. The pending status means the verification has not been completed, and the consequences for individual consumers will depend on the applicable eligibility rules and the outcome of the verification.

The exercise is also expected to examine whether some beneficiaries fall outside the eligibility requirements. Officials are checking details that may indicate whether a person is an income tax payer or holds voter identification linked to another state, among other information.

Beneficiaries found to be ineligible could potentially be removed from the scheme. The stated purpose of the exercise is therefore not simply to collect information but also to prevent misuse and ensure that the subsidy is directed towards eligible households.

With nearly three quarters of the verification work already completed, electricity supply companies now have to cover the remaining 45.78 lakh cases before the deadline. The pace of the exercise will be important as September 30 approaches.

For households that are yet to complete the process, cooperation with the verification team could help avoid uncertainty over their scheme status. Beneficiaries should provide accurate information when officials visit and follow any instructions issued by the concerned electricity supply company.

The scale of the exercise shows the challenge involved in checking such a large beneficiary base. With around 1.65 crore beneficiaries associated with Gruha Jyothi, even a small percentage of pending cases represents a substantial number of households.

The government is expected to have a clearer picture of eligible and ineligible beneficiaries after the verification exercise is completed. Until then, the pending 45.78 lakh cases remain an important part of the process.
