WhatsApp Introduces In App Bill Payments In India For Electricity And Utility Bills
WhatsApp has introduced in app bill payments in India, allowing users to check, manage and pay electricity and utility bills through the platform using multiple payment methods directly within WhatsApp.

WhatsApp has expanded its payment services in India with a new in app bill payment facility. The feature is designed to let users handle regular household and utility payments without leaving the messaging platform.
The new facility is connected to the Bharat Connect network and gives users access to thousands of billers across several categories. These include electricity, water, piped gas, FASTag recharge, insurance premiums, credit card bills and loan payments. The service covers 30 categories and 22,722 billers, giving users a broad range of options from a single payment interface.
For people who already use WhatsApp for payments, the addition could make recurring bills easier to manage. Instead of opening a separate application whenever a bill becomes due, users can access the payment section from WhatsApp and complete the transaction there.
The platform can also fetch details of upcoming bills linked to supported accounts. Information about billers used previously can remain available on the Payments home screen, which can make repeat payments more convenient.
Another useful option is the ability to link multiple consumer accounts with the same utility provider. This means users can keep track of different connections, such as those for a home, office or a family member, through the same service.
WhatsApp has also arranged frequently used bill categories on the main payment screen. Other services can be found through the wider directory, giving users access to additional billers without having to search through multiple applications.
Users can choose from several payment methods while paying their bills. The available options include UPI, debit cards and credit cards, depending on the payment flow and supported service.
How To Pay Bills On WhatsApp
To use the new service, users first need to open WhatsApp on their phone and select the rupee payment icon available in the navigation area. They can then choose the relevant bill category and select their utility provider.
After selecting the provider, the required consumer number or account identification details need to be entered and confirmed. WhatsApp can then retrieve the available bill information, allowing users to check the amount due before making the payment.
Once the bill details have been verified, users can select their preferred payment method. The transaction can then be authorised to complete the payment.
The latest addition builds on WhatsApp existing payment and public service features in India. The platform already supports services such as mobile recharges, metro transit ticketing and certain government citizen services through automated chat experiences.
By adding utility payments, WhatsApp is moving further into everyday financial transactions that users regularly need to complete. Electricity and other household bills are recurring expenses, so having them available alongside existing payment services could make the platform more useful for routine tasks.
The company is rolling out the bill payment feature gradually across India. The service is expected to reach Android and iOS users more widely over the coming weeks, although availability may depend on the rollout and supported billers.
Users should also check the bill details and payment amount carefully before confirming any transaction. The exact options available can vary depending on the utility provider and payment method supported through the service.
