Aadhaar Card Without Birth Certificate: What Parents Need to Know

Aadhaar has become an important identity document for people across India, including children. Parents often want to enrol their child early so that Aadhaar is available when needed for school related work, government services and other official requirements.

One question that frequently comes up is whether a child can get Aadhaar when the parents do not have a birth certificate. The answer depends on the childs date of birth and the documents available. According to the Unique Identification Authority of India, a birth certificate is mandatory as proof of date of birth and relationship for a child born on or after October 1 2023.

This means parents should not assume that a domicile certificate can simply replace a birth certificate in every case. The acceptable documents and enrolment process are determined by the current UIDAI rules.

What about children born before October 1 2023

For children born before October 1 2023, the documentation requirements can be different depending on the enrolment route and the documents available. UIDAI has separate lists of acceptable documents for children below five years and other age groups.

Parents can use Head of Family based enrolment in eligible cases, where the mother, father or legal guardian participates in the enrolment process. The parent or guardian needs to authenticate the enrolment and provide the required supporting documents.

Therefore, anyone applying without a birth certificate should first check the latest acceptable document list rather than relying on information circulating online.

Aadhaar enrolment for young children

For a resident Indian child below five years, the parent or legal guardian must accompany the child to an Aadhaar enrolment centre. The childs name, date of birth, gender and address are recorded, while the childs photograph is captured as biometric information at this stage.

The Aadhaar number of the parent or legal guardian is also captured when the enrolment is based on the Head of Family process. The parent or guardian provides consent and authenticates the application.

Date of birth information is important

UIDAI distinguishes between a verified date of birth and a date of birth that is declared or approximate. When valid documentary proof is submitted, the date of birth can be marked as verified. Without documentary evidence, the date can be recorded as declared or approximate under the applicable rules. In such cases, only the year of birth may be printed on the Aadhaar letter.

This is why parents should not treat the absence of a birth certificate as a simple paperwork issue. The document requirement can affect how the childs date of birth is recorded.

Is Aadhaar enrolment free

New Aadhaar enrolment is free of charge. Parents need to visit an authorised Aadhaar enrolment centre with the child and the required original documents. UIDAI says the original documents are returned after verification and electronic capture.

For children, Aadhaar generation normally takes up to 30 days from the date of enrolment, according to the current UIDAI information.
