Mahindra XEV 9S Emerges as India Top Selling Electric SUV Overtaking MG Windsor EV

Mahindra XEV 9S leads Indian electric passenger vehicle sales with impressive growth premium features multiple battery choices and strong demand as the country's electric mobility market expands rapidly.

Mahindra and Mahindra has achieved a significant milestone in India’s fast growing electric vehicle market, with the XEV 9S emerging as the best selling electric passenger vehicle during the first quarter of the current financial year. The flagship electric SUV has overtaken the MG Windsor EV in wholesale sales, highlighting Mahindra’s growing presence in the country’s increasingly competitive EV segment.

The achievement comes at a time when India’s electric passenger vehicle market is witnessing remarkable growth. Industry data shows that sales of electric passenger vehicles reached 31788 units in July alone, representing an impressive year on year increase of 81.6 percent. Rising fuel prices, improving charging infrastructure and increasing consumer confidence in electric mobility have all contributed to this strong growth.

Mahindra has also recorded an exceptional performance in its own electric vehicle business. The company’s EV sales climbed by more than 124 percent compared with the same period last year, reaching 7677 units. This sharp increase reflects the growing popularity of Mahindra’s electric offerings and the positive response received from customers looking for premium electric SUVs.

Introduced in November last year, the Mahindra XEV 9S has quickly established itself as one of the company’s flagship electric vehicles. Mahindra describes it as India’s first authentic seven seater electric SUV developed on its advanced INGLO architecture. The platform has been specifically designed for electric mobility, allowing better space utilisation, improved driving dynamics and enhanced battery integration.

The XEV 9S is available with a starting ex showroom price of Rs 19.95 lakh, making it an attractive option for buyers seeking a premium electric SUV with modern technology and spacious interiors. The vehicle is offered with three battery pack options, allowing customers to choose a variant that best suits their driving requirements and budget.

The entry level version features a 59 kWh battery pack capable of generating a peak power output of 170 kW. Buyers seeking additional performance can opt for the 70 kWh battery variant, which delivers 180 kW of peak power. The range topping model comes equipped with a larger 79 kWh battery that produces up to 210 kW of peak power, providing stronger acceleration and enhanced overall performance.

Apart from its performance, the XEV 9S has attracted buyers with its bold exterior styling. The electric SUV features distinctive L shaped LED daytime running lights, vertically positioned projector headlamps and Mahindra Electric branding at both ends of the vehicle. The modern design gives the SUV a futuristic appearance while maintaining the robust stance expected from a premium utility vehicle.

Interior space has become one of the vehicle’s biggest strengths. Mahindra has designed the cabin to maximise passenger comfort, offering generous room across both the front and second rows. According to the company, the combined usable cabin space extends to 4076 litres, making long distance travel more comfortable for families and larger groups.

The XEV 9S also provides a spacious 527 litre boot, allowing owners to carry substantial luggage during vacations or daily travel. The practical storage capacity further enhances the SUV’s appeal among customers looking for a family friendly electric vehicle.

Passenger comfort has received significant attention inside the cabin. The second row offers a premium seating experience with reclining and sliding adjustments, ventilated seats and dedicated sunshades. Mahindra has also included a Boss Mode feature that allows rear passengers to increase legroom by adjusting the front passenger seat, enhancing comfort during long journeys.

Technology plays a central role in the XEV 9S experience. The SUV comes equipped with three large 31.24 centimetre digital displays that provide information, entertainment and vehicle controls through a modern interface. Wireless smartphone charging ensures added convenience, while support for 5G connectivity enables advanced connected car services and faster data communication.

Music enthusiasts are likely to appreciate the premium 16 speaker Harman Kardon audio system, which supports Dolby Atmos technology for an immersive listening experience. The high quality sound system complements the premium cabin and strengthens the vehicle’s positioning in the upper end of the electric SUV segment.

Charging infrastructure remains one of the biggest concerns for electric vehicle buyers, and Mahindra has been working to address this challenge. The company has established an ultra fast charging network to support its growing range of electric vehicles. Expanded charging facilities are expected to improve convenience and encourage more customers to switch from conventional petrol and diesel vehicles.

The rapid growth of India’s electric vehicle market reflects changing consumer preferences and broader industry trends. Increasing awareness about environmental sustainability, government support for cleaner mobility and improvements in battery technology have accelerated EV adoption across the country. At the same time, higher petrol and diesel prices have encouraged many buyers to consider electric alternatives for long term savings.

Competition within the electric SUV segment continues to intensify as manufacturers introduce feature rich models with improved driving range, advanced safety technologies and connected features. Mahindra’s strong sales performance demonstrates that customers are responding positively to locally developed electric vehicles offering premium design and modern technology.

Industry analysts believe Mahindra’s success with the XEV 9S could further strengthen the company’s position in India’s expanding EV landscape. As charging infrastructure continues to improve and battery technology advances, demand for premium electric SUVs is expected to grow steadily over the coming years.

With impressive sales momentum, multiple battery options, premium features and a spacious cabin, the Mahindra XEV 9S has emerged as one of the most successful electric vehicle launches in the country. Its rise to the top of the sales charts highlights the increasing acceptance of electric mobility among Indian consumers and signals a promising future for Mahindra’s expanding electric vehicle portfolio.
