India May Introduce Age Based Restrictions on Social Media Access for Children

The government is studying global regulations on child safety, online wellbeing, and harmful digital content before deciding whether age based restrictions on social media should be introduced in India

The Indian government is considering new measures that could limit social media access for children as concerns about online safety and digital wellbeing continue to grow. According to recent reports, officials are examining whether users below the age of 16 should face restrictions when accessing social media platforms. No final decision has been taken, but the issue is currently under review.

The discussion comes at a time when many countries are tightening rules to protect young users from harmful online experiences. Governments across the world have raised concerns about addictive platform designs, mental health challenges, cyber risks, and exposure to inappropriate content. India is now closely monitoring these international developments before deciding on its own policy.

Electronics and Information Technology Secretary S Krishnan said the government is carefully studying how other countries have addressed the issue. He noted that the matter requires detailed analysis because it has become a global concern rather than a challenge faced by a single country. According to him, India wants to understand the effectiveness of measures introduced elsewhere before adopting a similar approach.

Officials have indicated that discussions with the European Union and other countries have repeatedly highlighted the risks associated with social media use among children. These conversations have focused on issues such as online safety, mental wellbeing, and the influence of harmful content on younger audiences. Similar concerns have also been raised within India by parliamentary standing committees and other stakeholders who have called for stronger safeguards.

Although the government is evaluating different options, authorities have clarified that no policy has been finalized. The ongoing review is expected to consider international experiences, expert recommendations, and the potential impact of any new regulations on children, parents, and digital platforms operating in the country.

Several nations have already introduced age based restrictions in recent months. Australia became the first country to announce a ban on social media access for children under the age of 16. The move drew global attention and encouraged other governments to explore similar policies aimed at improving online safety for young users.

The United Arab Emirates has also adopted a stricter approach by restricting social media access for children below the age of 15. Meanwhile, several European countries are working on new regulations that could place tighter controls on how children use digital platforms and interact online.

The United Kingdom has also announced plans to introduce restrictions for users under the age of 16. Reports suggest that platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and X could be covered under the proposed rules. However, messaging applications such as WhatsApp and Signal may remain outside the scope of those restrictions.

As digital platforms become an increasingly important part of everyday life, governments around the world are trying to balance online freedom with child safety. India’s review reflects a broader international effort to create a safer online environment for younger users while carefully considering the long term impact of any new regulations before they are introduced.
