Karnataka Cabinet Expansion Nears Final Stage as Congress Leadership Reviews Ministerial List
Congress leaders held a series of meetings in New Delhi as the party leadership reviewed names for Karnataka cabinet expansion with youth representation regional balance and women leaders under consideration.

The long awaited expansion of the Karnataka cabinet appears to be moving closer to completion after a series of high level discussions in New Delhi. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is understood to have reviewed multiple recommendations before preparing a final shortlist for the new ministers, raising expectations that the expansion could take place soon.
The Congress government, led by Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, has been functioning with only 13 ministers since taking office. Nearly one and a half months have passed without the remaining vacancies being filled, prompting growing speculation within political circles. With 20 cabinet positions still vacant and more than 50 legislators reportedly aspiring for ministerial roles, the selection process has become one of the party’s most closely watched political exercises.
According to party sources, Rahul Gandhi held separate meetings with Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President BK Hariprasad. The discussions reportedly focused on evaluating different recommendations and finalizing the list of ministers while keeping political and regional factors in mind.
Sources indicate that both Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar submitted their individual recommendations to the central leadership. These were reportedly examined alongside another list prepared by the Congress high command before a consolidated shortlist was drafted. The meetings are also believed to have included discussions regarding the appointment of a new Speaker for the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
Although a meeting with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was expected in New Delhi, it reportedly did not take place after he left for Bengaluru on an urgent visit. Party leaders are now expected to hold further consultations with him before the final decision is announced. Senior leaders have maintained that the official announcement will be made only after the party leadership completes the approval process.
State Congress in charge Randeep Singh Surjewala has indicated that the cabinet expansion is likely to be completed before the monsoon session of the Karnataka Assembly, which is scheduled to begin on August 6. He also confirmed that discussions are continuing on both the cabinet vacancies and the appointment of the Assembly Speaker, with an announcement expected at an appropriate time.
The composition of the new cabinet is expected to reflect several political considerations. Party leaders are believed to be examining regional representation to ensure that different parts of Karnataka receive adequate participation in the government. At the same time, there is growing discussion within the party about giving opportunities to younger legislators as part of its future leadership strategy.
Another important issue under consideration is women’s representation. The current cabinet does not include any woman minister, and there is increasing demand within the party to address that imbalance during the expansion. Several senior leaders, including former ministers and experienced legislators, are reportedly lobbying for cabinet berths as the final selection process enters its concluding stage.
Political observers believe the final list will also reveal how the Congress leadership has balanced the interests of different factions within the party. The allocation of ministerial positions is expected to reflect both administrative priorities and internal political equations, making the expansion an important development for the state’s ruling party.
With Rahul Gandhi’s consultations reportedly completed, attention has now shifted to the Congress high command’s final approval. Once that process is over, the party is expected to announce the date for the swearing in ceremony. Until then, anticipation remains high over which leaders will secure cabinet positions and how the new team will shape the government’s next phase.
