Cabinet Reshuffle Likely Before Parliament Session as Major Changes Expected

The Union Cabinet reshuffle is expected before the Monsoon Session of Parliament, with several senior ministers likely to be replaced as the government prepares for future political and administrative priorities.

The Union government is reportedly preparing for a major Cabinet reshuffle ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, scheduled to begin on July 20. According to sources, an official announcement could be made at any time before the session starts, with significant changes expected in the Council of Ministers.

Several senior ministers are believed to be under consideration for replacement as part of the exercise. Reports suggest that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State Pankaj Chaudhary, and Minister of State Harsh Malhotra could be among those who may exit the Cabinet. However, the government has not issued any official confirmation.

Sources indicate that one of the primary objectives behind the Cabinet reshuffle is to induct younger leaders into key positions and reduce the average age of the ministerial team. Ministers above the age of 65 could face replacement in most cases, while some exceptions are expected. The reshuffle may also involve changes in portfolios for ministers who have held the same departments for an extended period.

Another factor behind the proposed changes is the BJP’s plan to accommodate leaders who recently joined the party from other political groups. Party strategists are said to be evaluating potential ministerial roles for these leaders as part of preparations for upcoming elections.

Speculation has also grown over the future of Hardeep Singh Puri. While reports suggest he could be moved out of the Cabinet and assigned a different responsibility, sources say no final decision has been publicly confirmed. His possible exit remains the subject of political discussion.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is also believed to be under consideration for a new organisational role within the party, particularly in southern India. Government sources maintain that the proposed move is not linked to dissatisfaction with her performance. Instead, it is viewed as part of a broader political strategy ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, with the leadership reportedly considering a fresh face to lead future economic initiatives.

Among the names being discussed for key responsibilities, former Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das is said to be a strong contender for a ministerial position. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is also being mentioned as a possible candidate for the Finance Ministry if changes are finalised.

Reports further suggest that Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is unlikely to be removed despite recent controversies. However, if he is assigned a major responsibility in Odisha politics in the future, he could step down from the Union Cabinet.

The reshuffle may also see the induction of several new ministers. BJP MP Anurag Thakur is being viewed as a likely entrant, while a few leaders from different regions are also reportedly under consideration as the party works to strengthen its political presence ahead of future electoral battles.
