Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Seychelles next week for a high profile diplomatic trip that will also include a unique wildlife encounter. During his visit, he is expected to meet Jonathan, the legendary giant tortoise believed to be 194 years old and regarded as the oldest living land animal in the world.
The visit marks the fiftieth anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles. As part of the official itinerary, Modi will attend the Seychelles National Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour and participate in several ceremonial events.
One of the highlights of the visit will take place at the National Botanical Gardens, where the Prime Minister is scheduled to plant a tree as a symbol of the long standing friendship between the two nations. Following the plantation ceremony, he will visit Jonathan, whose remarkable lifespan has made him a global attraction.
Jonathan is believed to have been born in 1832 and has witnessed nearly two centuries of world history. His age has been recognized by Guinness World Records, making him one of the most extraordinary living creatures on the planet.
Despite his advanced age, Jonathan continues to enjoy stable health under the care of veterinary experts. Although his eyesight has weakened and his sense of smell has diminished over the years, caretakers say he remains active and receives regular medical attention to ensure his wellbeing.
The meeting is expected to become one of the memorable moments of the Prime Minister’s Seychelles visit, combining diplomatic engagement with a celebration of one of nature’s most remarkable survivors.
