VinFast Overtakes Tesla in India Growing EV Market

Vietnam based VinFast is gaining strong momentum in India with affordable electric vehicles localized production and competitive pricing while Tesla struggles with higher import costs and limited sales growth nationwide.

India fast expanding electric vehicle market is witnessing a surprising shift as Vietnamese automaker VinFast moves ahead of Tesla in sales performance. The company has managed to strengthen its presence by focusing on local manufacturing, competitive pricing and vehicles designed specifically for Indian road and customer needs.

According to recent industry reports, Tesla has sold around 383 electric vehicles in India since September last year. During the same period, VinFast reportedly crossed sales of nearly 3568 units, marking a significant lead in the country growing EV segment.

Industry experts believe VinFast success is largely linked to its localization strategy. Unlike Tesla, which imports vehicles from its China factory and faces steep import duties, VinFast has established manufacturing operations in Tamil Nadu. Local production has allowed the company to reduce costs and offer more affordable pricing to Indian buyers.

The difference in pricing between the two brands has also become a major factor influencing customer decisions. VinFast VF6 electric SUV starts at around Rs 17.29 lakh, while the larger VF7 begins near Rs 21.89 lakh. In comparison, Tesla Model Y is priced much higher, starting close to Rs 60 lakh in India.

Last month, VinFast further expanded its Indian lineup by introducing the VF MPV 7 electric multi purpose vehicle. The model entered the market with a starting ex showroom price of Rs 24.49 lakh. The company appears to be targeting family buyers who want spacious electric vehicles at relatively accessible prices.

Tesla, on the other hand, continues to position itself in the premium EV category. The company recently launched the Model Y L in India at a starting price of Rs 61.99 lakh ex showroom. The electric crossover comes with a longer wheelbase and three row seating arrangement aimed at customers looking for more cabin space and luxury features.

The Model Y L was first introduced in China last year and is manufactured at Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory. The vehicle offers six seats and is designed as a long wheelbase version of the standard Model Y. Tesla claims the crossover delivers a WLTP certified driving range of around 681 kilometers and can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in nearly five seconds.

Despite Tesla strong global reputation and advanced technology, pricing remains one of its biggest challenges in India. High import duties continue to increase the cost of Tesla vehicles, making them accessible mainly to premium buyers. VinFast has taken advantage of this gap by bringing products that are more aligned with Indian customer expectations and budgets.

The Indian EV market has grown rapidly over the last few years, with buyers increasingly looking for affordable electric mobility options. Analysts say companies that focus on local manufacturing, competitive pricing and practical features are likely to gain faster traction in the country.

VinFast aggressive expansion strategy and growing dealership network are also helping the brand build visibility in major cities. The company is expected to introduce more electric models in the coming months as competition in India EV space intensifies further.

With Tesla still working to establish stronger local operations, VinFast currently appears to have gained an early advantage in one of the world most promising electric vehicle markets.
