Bhatkal Tragedy: In a heartbreaking incident that has sent shockwaves across the Uttara Kannada district, eight people drowned in the Tattihakkala River in Bhatkal taluk while attempting to collect clams. The tragic mishap has plunged the entire region into deep mourning, with the cries of the victims’ families echoing through the village.
According to preliminary reports, the tragedy occurred when a group of local villagers entered the river to gather clams (shellfish). Misjudging the depth of the water and the swiftness of the river current, they were swept away. Sources indicate that since it was a Sunday holiday, the group had headed to the river to collect clams for a family meal.
Upon receiving the information, local fishermen, fire and emergency services services, and the police rushed to the spot to launch an immediate rescue operation. Intense efforts are currently underway to recover the bodies from the deep stretches of the river.
The sudden demise of eight individuals from the same village has left Tattihakkala engulfed in grief. A case has been registered at the Bhatkal Rural Police Station, and law enforcement authorities are conducting further investigations.
