Trump deletes AI image portraying himself as Jesus after backlash

Washington: Former US President Donald Trump has deleted an AI-generated image depicting himself in a Christ-like form after facing widespread criticism and backlash on social media.
The controversial image was shared on his social media platform Truth Social, where Trump appeared dressed in a white robe, placing his hand on a sick individual as if performing a miraculous healing. The visual closely resembled biblical depictions of Jesus Christ, particularly scenes associated with divine healing. The background also featured elements such as the American flag, fighter jets, and angelic figures, further amplifying the symbolic imagery.
The post quickly drew sharp reactions from religious groups, political commentators, and the public. Critics accused Trump of hurting religious sentiments and attempting to portray himself in a divine light. Several Christian organizations termed the image inappropriate and offensive, arguing that it blurred the line between faith and political messaging.
The controversy intensified in the backdrop of Trump’s recent remarks against Pope Leo XIV, whom he had criticized over comments related to US actions in the Iran conflict. Trump had reportedly called the Pope “weak,” escalating tensions and adding a political dimension to the episode.
As outrage mounted online, Trump deleted the post within hours. Responding to the criticism, he clarified that the image was not intended to portray him as Jesus Christ. Instead, he claimed it was meant to symbolise a humanitarian gesture, similar to that of a doctor or organizations like the Red Cross helping those in need.
Despite the clarification, criticism did not subside. Many argued that using religious imagery for political or personal projection sends a misleading message and disrespects deeply held beliefs. The incident has reignited debates over the use of AI-generated content in political communication and the ethical boundaries of such portrayals.
The episode highlights the growing scrutiny faced by public figures over their social media conduct, especially when it involves sensitive religious symbolism.
