Russian President Vladimir Putin arrives in India for 23rd annual summit
Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in India on December 4 to attend the 23rd annual India–Russia summit. The visit marks a continuation of the long-standing strategic partnership between the two nations.
At Palam International Airport, Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally welcomed President Putin. Senior political and diplomatic officials from both countries were present to receive the Russian delegation. Accompanying President Putin were several Russian officials, including Defense Minister Andre Belousov.
During his two-day visit, President Putin is expected to engage in talks with Prime Minister Modi on a range of strategic and defense issues. The leaders are scheduled to attend a formal dinner meeting on the evening of arrival. In addition, India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will meet with his Russian counterpart Andre Belousov to discuss bilateral defense cooperation.
Key discussions are expected to focus on India’s interest in acquiring advanced military equipment from Russia, including the S-400 missile system and the upgrade of Su-30MKI fighter jets. Other defense hardware deals are also likely to be discussed to strengthen India’s military capabilities.
Apart from defense, both leaders are expected to explore avenues for enhancing civil nuclear cooperation. An MoU is anticipated to be signed during the summit to further collaboration in India’s nuclear energy sector.
The summit reinforces the strong India–Russia partnership and underscores mutual interests in strategic, defense, and economic collaboration. Both countries aim to continue deepening ties and maintaining long-term cooperation across multiple sectors.
This visit by President Putin is seen as an important diplomatic event, reflecting the importance both nations place on their bilateral relations. The outcomes of the summit are expected to have a significant impact on defense and strategic ties between India and Russia.
