Jaishankar expresses condolences on the passing of Khaleda Zia, meets Tarique Rahman in Dhaka

Dhaka Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, during his visit to Dhaka, met with the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Tarique Rahman, to convey India’s heartfelt condolences on the passing of his mother, former Prime Minister and BNP president, Begum Khaleda Zia.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Jaishankar shared that after arriving in Dhaka, he met with Tarique Rahman and handed him a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing India’s deep sympathy for the loss.

Jaishankar also conveyed India’s sorrow on behalf of the Indian government and underscored the significance of Khaleda Zia’s contributions to the bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh during her tenure.

Jaishankar further acknowledged Khaleda Zia’s role in the bilateral partnership, highlighting her views and values that have guided the development of the relationship between the two nations. He noted that her legacy would continue to shape the path forward for both countries.

Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, Rizvi Hamidullah, also shared details of Jaishankar’s visit and his expression of condolences on behalf of the Indian government.

Hamidullah noted that Jaishankar had recognized Khaleda Zia’s contributions to democracy in Bangladesh and expressed optimism for strengthening the bilateral relationship post the upcoming 2026 elections in Bangladesh.

As per reports, the mortal remains of Begum Khaleda Zia were brought to her Gulshan residence in Dhaka earlier today. Her family members and close relatives paid their final respects before her Namaz-e-Janaza, which will be held later at the Manik Mia Avenue, near the National Parliament building in Dhaka, at 2:00 PM.

The funeral procession was attended by prominent figures including Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, as well as other dignitaries. Khaleda Zia’s final rites will take place beside the grave of her husband, former president Ziaur Rahman, in the Sheer-e-Bangla Nagar area. The city was placed under tight security to ensure a peaceful and respectful farewell for the late leader.
