WhatsApp username feature will allow chats without phone number
WhatsApp is preparing new privacy focused features including usernames and guest chats allowing users to communicate without sharing phone numbers while maintaining secure end to end encrypted conversations.

WhatsApp is working on major updates aimed at strengthening user privacy and making communication more flexible. One of the most anticipated additions is a username feature that will allow people to connect and chat without sharing their personal phone numbers.
The new system is expected to work similarly to platforms where users interact through unique usernames instead of mobile numbers. By creating a personal username, WhatsApp users will be able to send messages, make calls and connect with others while keeping their phone numbers private.
Reports suggest that the feature could roll out globally sometime around mid 2026. Although the concept has been in development for a long time, the company now appears closer to introducing it officially for users worldwide.
The introduction of usernames is seen as a significant step toward improving privacy on the platform. Many users prefer not to reveal their phone numbers when joining group discussions, business conversations or communicating with new contacts. With usernames, interactions can happen without exposing personal details.
At the same time, WhatsApp plans to keep the existing system intact for users who prefer the traditional method. People who wish to continue chatting through phone numbers will still be able to do so, making the username option entirely voluntary.
The idea is similar to features already available on other messaging platforms where usernames act as public identifiers. Users can choose a unique name that others can search for or use to start a conversation without needing a phone number.
Another feature under development is called guest chats. This option may allow people to participate in conversations through a browser link even if they do not have a full WhatsApp account. Such a feature could be useful for quick communication or temporary interactions.
Guest users are expected to have limited access to certain functions compared to registered users. However, the company intends to maintain its end to end encryption standard to ensure that conversations remain secure and private.
These updates reflect WhatsApp’s broader effort to enhance privacy while keeping the platform easy to use. As digital communication continues to grow, features like usernames and guest chats could give users more control over how they connect with others.
