WhatsApp Read Once Text Feature in Development Brings New Privacy Control for Users

WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will let users send text messages that disappear after being viewed once, enhancing privacy and reducing message persistence in personal and group chats

WhatsApp is preparing a fresh privacy focused update that could change the way users send sensitive messages. The platform is reportedly working on a View Once Text Messages feature that allows typed messages to disappear after being opened one time by the recipient. This new development is still under testing and has not reached beta users yet.

The idea behind this feature is to make private communication more flexible. At present, WhatsApp already supports View Once mode for photos, videos and voice notes, but text messages have remained outside this system. With the upcoming update, users may soon be able to apply the same disappearing rule to written messages as well.

According to reports from WABetaInfo, the feature will be integrated directly into the message sending process. After typing a message, users may need to long press the send button and select an option like Send as view once. Once delivered, the recipient will only be able to open and read it a single time before it disappears permanently from the chat.

This functionality is expected to work in both individual conversations and group chats, giving users more control over what they share and how long it remains visible. However, WhatsApp Channels are likely to be excluded since they are designed for one way broadcast updates rather than private exchanges.

The feature could also simplify existing workarounds. Many users currently convert sensitive text into images just to use the View Once option. A direct text based version would remove that extra step and make private sharing much easier and faster.

At the moment, the feature is still under internal development and is not available to testers. Industry expectations suggest that it may first arrive for select TestFlight beta users before gradually expanding to a wider audience in a future update.
