Sony Xperia 1 VIII Leak Shows Square Camera Design and Flagship Power Build

Sony is preparing its next Xperia flagship smartphone with a redesigned camera layout, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 performance, expandable storage support, and upgraded imaging hardware expected to debut in a refreshed premium design approach.

Sony is once again preparing to refresh its flagship lineup, and early leaks around the Sony Xperia 1 VIII suggest that the company may be planning one of its most noticeable design changes in years. The smartphone is expected to succeed the Xperia 1 VII and could arrive with a completely reworked rear camera layout along with upgraded internal hardware aimed at high end users.

One of the biggest talking points around the upcoming device is the shift in design language. Reports indicate that Sony may move away from its traditional vertical camera strip and instead introduce a square shaped camera island. This new module is expected to house a triple camera setup along with an LED flash, bringing it closer in line with more modern flagship designs while still maintaining Sony’s minimal aesthetic.

Camera performance is expected to remain a key highlight. The Xperia 1 VIII could feature a 48 megapixel triple rear camera system, including a telephoto lens. This would be a continuation of Sony’s focus on balanced imaging hardware, following the Xperia 1 VII which also used high resolution primary and ultra wide sensors paired with a dedicated telephoto unit for zoom capabilities.

Performance upgrades are also expected to be significant. The device is rumored to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, positioning it among the most powerful Android smartphones of its generation. This would likely be paired with support for 5G connectivity, Wi Fi, and wireless charging, along with the return of a 3.5 mm audio jack, something Sony fans still appreciate in flagship devices.

Storage flexibility may also be retained, as leaks suggest the inclusion of a microSD card slot for expandable memory. This feature continues Sony’s long standing approach of offering users more control over storage compared to many competing flagship phones.

Another leak linked to FCC certification hints at a Sony device model number PY7 30515Z, which is believed to be associated with the Xperia 1 VIII. Along with connectivity details, the listing also points toward multiple color options including purple, green, and black, suggesting Sony may continue its tradition of bold but premium color choices.

Earlier IMEI database listings under the model XQ GE44 also strengthened expectations of the device’s development progress. While official confirmation is still pending, multiple leaks indicate that Sony is actively preparing the next generation Xperia flagship with a strong focus on design refinement and performance improvements.

Looking back at its predecessor, the Sony Xperia 1 VII featured a 6.5 inch OLED HDR display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, and a triple camera system combining 48 megapixel primary and ultra wide sensors with a 12 megapixel telephoto lens. It also included a 5000 mAh battery with 30 W fast charging support, setting a strong foundation for the next model to build upon.
