The smartphone camera race is entering a new phase, and Samsung appears to be preparing another major step forward with its upcoming flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra. Early reports suggest that the device could introduce a 200 megapixel primary camera with variable aperture technology, marking a significant shift in mobile photography.
According to industry leaks shared on Weibo by tipster Smart Pikachu, Samsung is currently testing variable aperture camera systems for its next generation flagship devices. Interestingly, the testing is not limited to Samsung alone, as Huawei is also reportedly exploring similar technology. This suggests that smartphone photography could soon become more adaptive and intelligent across brands.
Variable aperture technology allows the camera to adjust light intake depending on the environment. Unlike fixed aperture systems found in most smartphones today, this feature helps improve image quality in both bright daylight and low light conditions. Devices like the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and Honor Magic 6 Pro have already introduced this concept, showing how flexible lens systems can enhance photography results.
Samsung has already made progress in this direction with its existing lineup. The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra features a quad camera setup, including a 200 megapixel primary sensor with f 1.4 aperture, along with multiple telephoto and ultra wide lenses.
