Apple iPhone 17 tops global smartphone sales in first quarter as strong demand across key markets pushes company ahead while Samsung and Xiaomi budget models secure multiple positions in rankings

The global smartphone market has started the year with a clear winner, as iPhone 17 from Apple has emerged as the top selling device in the first quarter. The strong performance highlights growing consumer preference for balanced flagship models rather than only premium variants.

According to recent data from Counterpoint Research, the standard iPhone 17 secured the number one position worldwide, outperforming even its higher priced siblings. The iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro followed closely behind, taking the second and third spots respectively. This marks a significant shift where the base model is driving the bulk of sales within the lineup.

Apple’s presence in the top ten remains dominant, with four devices making the list. The iPhone 16 also managed to secure a position, indicating continued demand for previous generation models. The company recently reported strong quarterly earnings, with iPhones contributing a major share of its overall revenue. Growth was particularly strong across markets such as India, the United States, Japan, Western Europe, Greater China, and Southeast Asia.

While Apple led the premium segment, Samsung maintained a strong presence in the rankings through its budget and mid range offerings. Models like the Samsung Galaxy A07 4G and Samsung Galaxy A17 5G secured fourth and fifth positions. Other devices including the Samsung Galaxy A56, Samsung Galaxy A36, and Samsung Galaxy A17 4G also featured in the top ten, reflecting consistent demand for affordable smartphones.

Another notable entry came from Xiaomi through its sub brand device Redmi A5, which claimed the tenth spot. The model has gained traction in emerging markets due to its competitive pricing, making it one of the most accessible smartphones in the list.

Interestingly, flagship competition remains intense, as devices like the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra narrowly missed entering the rankings despite receiving positive market response. This indicates that while premium smartphones attract attention, volume sales are increasingly driven by value oriented and balanced devices.

The success of the iPhone 17 also reflects Apple’s strategy of delivering strong performance, camera capabilities, and long term software support in its standard model. Consumers appear to be prioritizing reliability and overall experience over high end specifications alone.

As the year progresses, industry analysts expect competition to intensify further, especially in the mid range and affordable premium segments. However, Apple’s early lead with the iPhone 17 has set a strong benchmark for rivals in the global smartphone market.
