BYD to Raise Electric Vehicle Prices in India Amid Rising Costs and Global Tensions

Price hike of up to three percent expected as rising raw material costs and Middle East tensions push freight expenses higher, impacting electric vehicle pricing strategy across the Indian market

Electric vehicle buyers in India may soon need to stretch their budgets further as BYD prepares to increase prices across its lineup. The Chinese automaker, which has steadily expanded its presence in the country, is planning a price revision of up to three percent on its electric vehicles in response to rising costs and global supply pressures.

The decision comes at a time when the broader EV industry is grappling with higher input expenses. Key materials used in battery production, including aluminum and petroleum coke, have become more expensive in recent months. At the same time, logistical challenges linked to tensions near the Strait of Hormuz have driven up freight costs, making imports more expensive for automakers dependent on global supply chains.

BYD currently offers a range of models in India, including the Atto 3, eMax 7, Seal, and Sealion 7. Prices for these vehicles currently span from about Rs 24.99 lakh to Rs 54.90 lakh ex showroom. Following the revision, customers could see increases ranging from roughly Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh depending on the model.

Among the lineup, the Sealion 7 is expected to witness the steepest hike. The model has already seen a price adjustment earlier this year, signaling continued pressure on costs. The Atto 3 could see its starting price move closer to Rs 25.5 lakh, while the eMax 7 and Seal are also expected to become noticeably more expensive.

Interestingly, the price hike comes even as BYD continues to strengthen its product appeal. Earlier, the company introduced a special anniversary edition of the Sealion 7, marking one year of its presence in the Indian market. This version brought updates such as the inclusion of LFP technology for its low voltage battery, along with extended warranty coverage of up to eight years or 1,50,000 kilometers.

Inside the cabin, the anniversary edition features a refreshed theme along with premium elements such as a large rotating infotainment screen and a digital instrument cluster. Features like a driver monitoring system and a distinctive crystal gear selector aim to enhance the overall driving experience.

Despite the price increase, competition in the EV segment remains intense. Global players including Tesla continue to challenge BYD’s position, while domestic demand for electric mobility in India is steadily growing. However, rising ownership costs could test consumer sentiment, especially in a market that is still sensitive to pricing.

Industry observers note that such price revisions are becoming increasingly common as automakers navigate a complex mix of geopolitical risks and supply chain disruptions. For buyers, the coming months may be crucial in deciding whether to make a purchase before prices climb further or wait for more stable conditions in the market.
