Yatnal Slams Priyank Kharge’s Call to Ban RSS Activities, Sparks Political Firestorm
Bengaluru: A political row has erupted in Karnataka after Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge wrote to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seeking a ban on Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activities in government premises. The move has drawn sharp criticism from expelled BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, who accused Kharge of “intellectual poverty” and political opportunism.
Taking to social media platform X, Yatnal defended the RSS, calling it the world’s largest volunteer force and a beacon of selfless service. “RSS volunteers are the first to respond during natural disasters, train accidents, pandemics, and floods. The Sangh stands for patriotism, discipline, and social service,” he posted.
Yatnal further asserted that no one has ever succeeded in banning the RSS, and even its critics respect the organization. He challenged Kharge to focus on developing Kalaburagi — the district he represents — which continues to be labeled as one of Karnataka’s most backward regions. “Instead of targeting RSS, make Kalaburagi a model district. That would be real service,” Yatnal said.
He also demanded that if bans are to be imposed, they should begin with organizations like SDPI, which he termed “anti-national.” Yatnal called for action against individuals who brandish swords during communal processions and urged a ban on animal sacrifice during festivals like Bakrid. He criticized madrasas that allegedly spread hatred and fail to teach modern subjects such as English, science, and mathematics.
Meanwhile, Priyank Kharge’s letter has been forwarded by CM Siddaramaiah to Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh for review. No official order has been issued yet, but the proposal has stirred intense debate on secularism, freedom of association, and the role of ideological organizations in public spaces. CM Siddaramaiah had told officials to verify the content of letter.
In his letter to chief minister Siddaramaiah Priyank Kharge said that ”The Constitution upholds integrity, equality, and unity. It is the government’s duty to suppress divisive forces and protect secular values. The RSS is using government schools and public grounds to instill negative thoughts in children and youth, undermining national unity and constitutional principles. I request a ban on all RSS activities — including branches, Sanghiks, and Baithaks in government spaces such as schools, parks, Muzrai temples, and archaeological sites.”
