Team India Big Shock: Rohit Sharma Ruled out of South Africa series

Team India suffered a big Shock ahead of their upcoming tour of South Africa as vice-captain and opener Rohit Sharma is ruled out of upcoming Tests due to a finger injury. India A captain Priyank Panchal has been drafted in as cover for the Hitman Rohit Sharma.

Team India white ball captain Rohit Sharma suffered the injury while batting in the nets at the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai on Sunday. It is not yet clear whether Rohit will be available for the subsequent one-day international series which starts from January 19.

The three ODIs are going to be the first for Rohit Sharma as the official ODI captain of the Indian team after he was appointed to the top job last week. Rohit Sharma also replaced Ajinkya Rahane as India’s Test vice-captain. Rohit Sharma has been in red-hot form with the bat in Tests this year since being elevated to the opener’s position.

The 34-year-old is India’s highest scorer in Tests this year with 906 runs in 11 Tests at 47.68 which also includes 2 hundred, four half-centuries. Meanwhile, India A captain Priyank Panchal has been drafted in as cover for the Hitman. 31-year-old Priyank Panchal, who plays for Gujarat, lead India A during the recent unofficial Test series in South Africa.

He hit 96 in the first unofficial Test against South Africa last month in Bloemfontien. Panchal has been a consistent performer in the domestic circuit, having scored 7011 runs, including 24 hundred and 25 fifties, in first-class cricket. India are scheduled to play 3 Tests and 3 ODIs in South Africa from December 26 while the four T20Is will be held at a later date.
