FC Bengaluru United defeated Chennaiyin FC in the Stafford Challenge Cup 2023 final to lift the trophy. It was a brilliant direct freekick from FCBU’s Vinil Poojary in the 31st minute which broke the deadlock. FC Bengaluru United won the Stafford Challenge Cup.
After the ball was confined to midfield for the best part of the early first half, FC Bengaluru United took the lead in the 30th minute. They forced a free-kick on the left as Rajat Roy brought Nikhil Mali. Vinil Poojary took the award and curled his left footer right into the top corner beating goalkeeper
Mohanraj all ends up for what was a truly spectacular goal. FCBU looked the better of the side and had the better of the exchanges but were unable to have a clear view as opponent defence denied them clear openings. Chennaiyin FC depended largely on striker Senthamil, their captain, to deliver the goods.
But he was tightly marked by the stopper Anil Chawan and Ajay Alex. Their inability to provide him more support also denied them possible chances as they were outnumbered by the FCBU players in the vicinity of the penalty area. But as the game progressed the visitors came more into the attacking picture.
A long floated by Sajal Bag saw Senthamil chest it down well, sprint past two defenders and slot past the onrushing goalkeeper Kabir Toufik for the equalizer. Both teams then closed shop and tried to push the game into the tie-breaker. But much against the run of play, FC Bengaluru all but scored when substitute Jurwa dribbled down the left and chipped towards the far post but the ball just lobbed over the cross bar.
However, with a tie-breaker looming large, FCBU pulled a rabbit out of the hat when they got the match-winner in the 94th minute. SelwynMiranda lobbed from the left and Irfan Yadwad headed into low into the near post as the team jumped with joy. There was little time left for Chennaiyin FC to do anything as the final whistle blew soon enough.
