What is the National Herald scam?

India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru launched the National Herald in 1938. This paper was published by Associated Journals Limited (AJL). It established 5,000 other freedom fighters as its shareholders in 1937. This company is not owned by any one person.

In 2010 Associated Journals Limited had 1,057 shareholders. It suffered heavy losses. Thus, its holdings were transferred to Young Indian Private Limited (YIL) in 2011. Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were on its board of directors. Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi were accused of being involved in the fraud when Associated Journals Limited was acquired by Young India Private Limited.

In 2012, BJP leader and lawyer Subramanian Swamy filed a complaint before the trial court. In his petition, BJP MP Subramanian Swamy had alleged that the Gandhi family had committed fraud and misappropriation of funds to acquire the National Herald newspaper. He alleged that the Gandhis had acquired assets owned by the National Herald by buying the newspaper’s erstwhile publisher, Associated Journals Limited (AJL), through an organization called Young Indian (YI).
