LPG supply concerns amid global tensions; Centre mandates Aadhaar-based e-KYC for consumers

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has now made Aadhaar-based biometric e-KYC mandatory to ensure transparency and prevent misuse of subsidies.

New Delhi : Amid concerns over potential LPG supply disruptions linked to escalating tensions in the Middle East, the Union government has introduced stricter verification norms for domestic gas consumers. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has now made Aadhaar-based biometric e-KYC mandatory to ensure transparency and prevent misuse of subsidies.

The move is aimed at streamlining the distribution system and plugging leakages in subsidy transfers. Consumers of public sector oil companies, including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum, will be required to complete the verification process.

Officials said customers can now complete the e-KYC process from home using mobile applications. By downloading the LPG provider’s app and the Aadhaar Face RD application, users can authenticate their identity through facial recognition, eliminating the need to visit distribution centres in most cases.

The new rule is particularly mandatory for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. Authorities have warned that failure to complete Aadhaar verification may lead to disruption in LPG refills or suspension of subsidy benefits. Additionally, consumers must complete biometric verification before availing the first cylinder refill of every financial year.

In a further tightening of norms, oil companies have introduced restrictions for inactive users. Customers who do not book a cylinder for more than nine months will be required to visit the LPG office and complete e-KYC verification in person before resuming services. Officials believe this step will help curb illegal diversion and black-market sales of LPG cylinders.

The process for Aadhaar authentication has been simplified for user convenience. Consumers need to log in to their LPG provider’s app using their registered mobile number or LPG ID, select the e-KYC or Aadhaar linking option, and verify their details. A facial scan through the Face RD app completes the authentication.

The government maintains that these measures are preventive and aimed at ensuring fair distribution during a time of global uncertainty. With international developments potentially impacting fuel supply chains, authorities are focusing on tightening domestic systems to avoid shortages and misuse.
