Toxic factory smoke triggers outrage in Koppal; 3 units face closure
Villagers claim the pollution has begun affecting public health, with many reporting respiratory issues, asthma, skin diseases and persistent breathing difficulties

Koppal, : Growing public anger over severe air pollution has forced the district administration in Koppal to crack down on industrial units allegedly releasing toxic smoke into the atmosphere. Authorities have issued show-cause notices to five factories for violating environmental norms, while closure orders have been initiated against three units accused of causing dangerous levels of pollution.
Residents across several villages have complained that thick black smoke from factories has turned the sky dark even during daytime. Locals say the air has become difficult to breathe as chemical-laced dust particles settle on houses, drinking water sources and agricultural fields.
Villagers claim the pollution has begun affecting public health, with many reporting respiratory issues, asthma, skin diseases and persistent breathing difficulties.
According to residents, the problem has been worsening for years despite repeated complaints to authorities. Frustrated by the lack of action, people recently staged protests demanding strict measures against polluting industries.
Officials from the district administration and the pollution control authorities visited Hirebaganal village in Koppal taluk to assess the situation following mounting public pressure. A meeting involving officials and local representatives was also held to address the crisis.
During the meeting, several villagers expressed their frustration over the deteriorating living conditions.

“We have industries, meetings and promises, but we do not have clean air or good health,” an elderly resident reportedly told officials while highlighting the impact of pollution on daily life.
Responding to the complaints, the authorities issued show-cause notices to five major industrial units for violating pollution control regulations. In addition, three factories accused of emitting extremely hazardous smoke have been ordered to shut operations immediately.
Suresh Itnal, Deputy Commissioner of Koppal district, said the administration has begun strict monitoring of industrial emissions.
“We are continuously monitoring industrial units. If factories release smoke without using proper filtration systems, strict action will be taken. We have already issued closure orders to three factories,” the Deputy Commissioner said.
Among the industries reportedly served notices are PBKS, Ispat, Vanya Steel and HRG units located in the industrial belt of Koppal taluk.
Officials said inspections have already been completed at three factories, and closure notices have been issued to two of them. Action against another unit is also under consideration based on inspection findings.

While residents welcomed the action, many cautioned that the crackdown should not remain a temporary measure.
Local activists say industrial development is important but cannot come at the cost of public health. Residents are now demanding permanent measures to ensure factories follow pollution control norms.
