IMD issued heavy rainfall alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the period up to December 17, 2025, the alert for heavy rainfall is primarily focused on the Southern Peninsula and the Island territories.
Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm Warnings (Till December 17):
Andaman & Nicobar Islands: Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) is very likely to occur from December 15th to December 18th.
Tamil Nadu & Kerala: The forecast indicates a likelihood of heavy rainfall at isolated places in the southern peninsula over the next few days, though widespread heavy rain is not predicted for all regions of the two states.
Light to moderate rainfall with isolated thunderstorms and lightning is very likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal. Isolated heavy rainfall is specifically likely over South Tamil Nadu on December 16th and 17th. Isolated heavy rain can still cause localized waterlogging and disrupt traffic in the affected southern districts.
Kerala: Rain or thundershowers are most likely to occur at a few places in Kerala. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala on December 17th. Western Himalayan Region (Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh) Light rainfall/snowfall at isolated places.
Interior Karnataka & Telangana Cold Wave conditions very likely at isolated places (especially on Dec 15th & 16th). North/Northeast India (e.g., Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Northeast India) Dense Fog conditions very likely in the early morning hours.
