Intense monsoon rains continue to batter several parts of India, leaving a trail of destruction across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, and Kerala. Flooding, landslides and building collapses have claimed lives, damaged infrastructure and forced thousands of people to move to safer locations.
In Mumbai, a four-storey residential building collapsed in the New Mhada area after continuous rainfall. Officials said six people lost their lives when the structure crashed onto nearby houses. Rain-related incidents across Maharashtra claimed at least 13 lives in a single day, prompting authorities to declare a holiday for schools and colleges in Mumbai.
The situation remained critical in Pune district, where Lonavala recorded nearly 90 centimetres of rainfall, one of the highest totals seen in the region in more than a decade. Officials described the rainfall as exceptional and warned residents to remain cautious.
Gujarat also witnessed severe flooding after torrential rain lashed the southern districts. In Surat’s Kamrej taluka, nearly 30 centimetres of rain fell within 10 hours, inundating roads and residential areas. Municipal authorities said more than 2,100 people had been evacuated to safer locations, while several flood-related deaths were reported in the district.
In Jammu and Kashmir, flash floods and landslides caused extensive damage in Doda and Kishtwar districts. Homes, shops and vehicles were swept away or buried under debris, while road connectivity on the Doda–Kishtwar highway was disrupted. Several vehicles were reportedly washed into the Chenab River as swollen streams overflowed.
Meanwhile, Kerala’s Wayanad district experienced another landslide near an under-construction tunnel project linking Wayanad and Kozhikode. One person was confirmed dead, several others were injured and a number of people remain missing. Rescue teams are continuing search operations amid challenging weather conditions.
Authorities said only engineers and security personnel were present at the tunnel site when the landslide occurred, as construction workers had already been moved out due to earlier weather warnings. A bus used to transport workers was also swept away by the swollen river nearby.
Political leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, expressed condolences over the tragedy and urged authorities to ensure swift rescue efforts and support for affected families.
With more rainfall forecast in several regions, disaster response agencies remain on high alert as rescue, relief and evacuation operations continue.
