Expelled TMC MLA Humayun Kabir begins construction of Babri-style mosque in Murshidabad

West Bengal: Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir, who was recently expelled from the party and went on to form his own political outfit, has initiated the construction of a mosque modelled on the demolished Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.

The foundation-laying work began on Wednesday in Murshidabad district amid considerable public attention. Kabir announced that the proposed mosque will be built at an estimated cost of ₹50–55 crore and is expected to be completed within two years.

The ceremonial foundation stone for the project had already been laid on December 6 last year, a date that holds historical significance in the Babri Masjid issue. On Wednesday afternoon, brick-laying work officially commenced in the presence of Kabir and his supporters.

Hundreds of local followers participated in the event, symbolically carrying bricks on their heads to express solidarity with the project. Addressing the gathering, Kabir strongly defended his decision to construct the mosque.

“Those who oppose this should step back. Every individual in this country has the freedom to follow their religion and build places of worship. My only aim is to please Allah,” he said.

The move has sparked political debate in West Bengal, with critics alleging that the initiative could create unnecessary communal tension. Supporters, however, claim it is a legitimate religious project and part of their constitutional rights.

Kabir further announced plans for a large-scale religious procession named the “Babri Yatra.” Initially, he had planned a 235-km car rally from Palashi to Itahar with 100 vehicles. However, due to ongoing board examinations in the region, the programme has now been modified.

Instead, Kabir said a 22-km padayatra (foot march) will be held on Thursday from Palashi to Beldanga, with an expected participation of nearly 50,000 people. The decision to scale down the rally was taken to avoid inconvenience to students and the public.

Humayun Kabir was expelled from the ruling TMC following internal differences and controversial statements. Since then, he has been vocal in asserting his independent political identity and has been actively mobilising support in Murshidabad.

Political analysts believe the construction of a Babri-style mosque could further intensify polarisation in the region ahead of future elections. The development is being closely watched by both state authorities and central agencies to ensure law and order.

Despite opposition from certain quarters, Kabir remains firm on his stand and has vowed to complete the project as planned, stating that it is purely a religious initiative and not aimed at provoking any community.
