Bank Strike: Bank holidays in January 2023

New Delhi: Bank employees have put forward many demands including five days work in a week, renewal of pension system of bank employees, salary revision, cancellation of NPS.Bank unions organization ‘United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) ‘ has called for bank strike across the country on 30th and 31st of this month demanding only five days work in a week and fulfillment of various demands . No response has been received from the Indian Bankers Association (Indian Banks’ Association) to the letters related to our demands . Therefore, a decision has been taken to hold a strike on January 30 and 31, said CH Vekatachalam, General Secretary of the All India Bank Employees’ Association. He said that after a meeting held in Mumbai, the decision to go on strike was taken.

Due to the strike of the bank employees, there is a possibility of disruption in the banking transactions at the end of the month. January 28 is a bank holiday as it is the fourth Saturday. The next day is Sunday anyway. If the strike takes place on 30th and 31st, banking transactions will be suspended for a total of four days. As a result there has been a variation in banking services. Internet banking, mobile banking etc. will not have a big impact on online transactions.

Earlier, the All India Bank Employees’ Association had called for a nationwide bank strike on November 19, 2022. However, later the strike decision was withdrawn. The strike was called to demand fulfillment of demands on many issues including violation of Industrial Disputes Act, harassment of employees through transfer, increase in attacks on trade unions and refusal of wage revision in CSB Bank. The strike was called off as the bank employees union and the banks agreed to resolve the issues bilaterally. Now the bank employees are persistent for the fulfillment of other demands.
