6 doctors involved in Delhi blast: NIA arrests two more from Al Falah University

New Delhi : The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two more doctors from Al Falah University in Faridabad in connection with the Red Fort blast that killed 12 people, bringing the total number of doctors linked to the terror plot to six.

According to sources, the arrested suspects have been identified as Dr. Mujammil Shakeel and Dr. Umar Mohammed. Both were picked up from the university campus late Tuesday night. The arrests follow Monday’s detention of eight other suspects, including Shaheena Shahid, a female doctor accused of recruiting women into terror networks.

The NIA has turned its focus toward Al Falah University after intelligence inputs suggested that several of its faculty members and students were radicalized. Investigators revealed that around 40 percent of the university’s medical staff are of Kashmiri origin, and some are suspected to have terror links.

Delhi Crime Branch officials have retrieved CCTV footage from the campus and nearby areas to trace the suspects’ movements. Earlier, during the probe into the seizure of 2,900 kg of explosives from two houses in Faridabad, Mujammil’s name had surfaced. Investigators found that he had rented those houses while living on campus, allegedly to store explosives and weapons.

A large cache of rifles and ammunition was also recovered from the car of Dr. Shaheena Shahid. Officials believe that the Red Fort blast was planned soon after these explosives were procured.

NIA sources said Umar Mohammed and Mujammil were close associates and key operatives in executing the terror attack. Both are being interrogated to trace the masterminds behind the plot.
