Paan has long been associated with Indian traditions, celebrations and grand family feasts. From weddings to festive gatherings, many people enjoy chewing paan after meals because of its refreshing taste and digestive appeal. Prepared using betel leaves along with ingredients like areca nut, lime, cardamom and sweet fillings, paan is often seen as a cultural delicacy. However, health experts now caution that this popular mouth freshener may not be suitable for everyone.

Medical professionals say that while plain betel leaves may offer limited digestive benefits, modern paan mixtures loaded with sweeteners, spices and processed ingredients can create serious health complications for people already dealing with certain medical conditions. Doctors especially advise individuals with chronic illnesses to be extra careful before consuming paan regularly.

People suffering from diabetes are among those who should stay away from sweet paan varieties. Many commercially prepared paans contain sugar rich ingredients such as gulkand, sweet syrups, candied fruits and flavored fillings. These ingredients can rapidly raise blood sugar levels and make diabetes management difficult. Health experts warn that frequent consumption may increase the risk of uncontrolled glucose spikes.

Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers are also advised to avoid paan consumption. According to doctors, some ingredients commonly added to paan, especially areca nut and certain flavoring agents, may negatively affect both maternal health and fetal development. Nursing mothers are also cautioned because harmful compounds could indirectly affect infants through breast milk.

People struggling with stomach ulcers, acidity or digestive disorders may face worsening symptoms after eating paan. Ingredients such as lime paste and strong spices can irritate the stomach lining and increase burning sensations. Individuals already dealing with acid reflux or gastric inflammation may experience severe discomfort after regular intake.

Health specialists also warn high blood pressure patients against consuming paan frequently. Certain stimulatory ingredients used in paan can increase heart rate and trigger temporary spikes in blood pressure. Those with cardiovascular risks or existing heart related conditions are advised to limit or completely avoid it.

Another major concern involves people suffering from mouth ulcers, gum infections or bleeding gums. Doctors explain that lime and other strong substances present in paan may aggravate existing oral wounds and increase irritation. Continuous chewing can also worsen infections and delay healing inside the mouth.

Experts say many people assume paan is harmless because of its traditional roots, but modern versions sold commercially often contain ingredients unsuitable for sensitive health conditions. Nutritionists recommend consulting a doctor before making paan a regular habit, especially for individuals with chronic illnesses.

While occasional consumption may not create problems for healthy individuals, medical experts stress that moderation is important. People with diabetes, hypertension, digestive issues or oral health problems are advised to stay cautious and prioritize long term health over temporary taste and cravings.
