Israel launches missile strikes on Iran capital Tehran; emergency declared amid fears of wider war

Tehran : In a dramatic escalation that threatens to destabilize the Middle East, Israel launched a series of missile strikes targeting Tehran, the capital of Iran, early Saturday morning. The attack triggered massive explosions across multiple locations in the city, intensifying fears of a full-scale war between the long-time regional adversaries.

According to initial reports, Israeli forces targeted strategic military and administrative installations, including facilities believed to be linked to Iran’s leadership. The developments come amid rising tensions and intelligence warnings suggesting a potential Iranian offensive against Israeli interests.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed the strikes, describing them as a “pre-emptive defensive operation” aimed at neutralizing imminent threats posed by Iran. He stated that the military had credible intelligence indicating preparations by Iranian forces to launch missile and drone attacks.

Powerful explosions were heard across Tehran, forcing residents to flee buildings in panic. Social media videos circulating online showed plumes of smoke rising from several districts, while emergency sirens and rescue operations were underway. Iranian authorities have not yet released official casualty figures, but the psychological impact on civilians has been significant.

Reports indicate that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was not present at the targeted location and had reportedly been moved to a secure undisclosed site as a precautionary measure. Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian is closely monitoring the situation along with senior military officials.

Following the strikes, Israel declared a nationwide state of emergency, anticipating retaliatory attacks. The Israeli military has activated advanced air defence systems, including the Iron Dome, to intercept potential incoming missiles and drones. Citizens have been advised to remain in shelters and follow emergency protocols.

Sources suggest the operation, reportedly codenamed “Operation Shield of Judah,” may have involved strategic coordination with United States, although Washington has not officially confirmed direct military participation. The escalation is expected to impact diplomatic negotiations and regional stability.

In response to the attack, Iran and neighbouring Iraq temporarily closed their airspace, suspending civilian flight operations as a precaution.

Global powers, including the United States and European nations, are closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation. Analysts warn that the latest developments could trigger broader military confrontation, raising serious concerns about security, oil markets, and geopolitical stability across West Asia.
