Hoskote warehouse was sealed after inspection

Food safety officials found hygiene violations

A food safety inspection at a Zepto warehouse in Hoskote near Bengaluru has resulted in the facility being sealed after officials reportedly found several violations related to hygiene, food handling and storage.

The inspection was carried out by officials from the Food Safety and Drugs Administration under the Health and Family Welfare Department. The team examined food products, storage conditions, labelling practices and the overall handling of items inside the warehouse.

According to the inspection findings, the facility had an unclean environment. Organic waste, discarded covers and bottles, dirt on the floor and empty cardboard boxes were reportedly found in different areas of the warehouse. Officials also raised concerns about the way some food products were being handled and stored.

Labelling practices were another concern during the inspection. Authorities reportedly identified cases of non compliance with Food Safety and Standards Authority of India requirements, along with alleged misbranding of certain products. The observations have added another layer to the action taken against the facility.

Following the inspection, officials sealed the warehouse and issued a notice to the company. A recommendation has also reportedly been made to initiate a case over the alleged food safety violations.

The department said that food businesses found violating safety requirements could face legal action. Officials also indicated that inspections of food handling and storage facilities would continue as part of efforts to ensure that consumers receive safe and properly handled food products.

The action comes at a time when quick commerce companies are handling large volumes of grocery and food products through warehouses located close to residential areas. Maintaining cleanliness and proper storage becomes particularly important in such facilities because products can move quickly from warehouses to customers.

Zepto has responded to the development, saying that food safety inspections are part of regular regulatory monitoring carried out by authorities. The company said it cooperated with officials during the inspection and has taken note of the observations raised by them.

The company also stated that necessary steps are being taken to address the issues pointed out during the inspection. The response indicates that Zepto is working with the authorities on the concerns identified at the Hoskote facility.

The incident highlights the importance of hygiene and proper food storage in quick commerce operations. As online grocery deliveries continue to expand, warehouses play a key role between suppliers and consumers, making compliance with food safety requirements an important part of the process.
