Voluntary shutdown in Koppal as anti-factory stir completes one year

Koppal : A voluntary bandh has been called in Koppal on Monday by the District Bachao Andolana Samiti and the Parisara Hitarakshana Samiti, coinciding with the first anniversary of the agitation against the Baldota factory.
Movement leaders said the protest began with a large demonstration on February 24 last year led by Gavisiddeshwara Swamiji, who had demanded the factory’s permanent closure. Despite repeated appeals and continued demonstrations, organisers claim no decisive action has been taken.
“The people’s struggle has continued for 116 days in its current phase. Since the factory remains operational, we are observing a voluntary bandh to reiterate our demand,” said convenor Manjunath Gondabala.
The bandh will be observed between 7 am and 6 pm. Lawyers’ associations and various civic groups have expressed solidarity with the protest. The private schools’ federation has also announced support.
A bike and auto rally is scheduled at 7 am in Bhagyanagar, followed by a rally from Gavi Math at 10 am. The procession will move through prominent junctions including Clock Tower and Ashoka Circle before concluding at the municipal protest site, where a stage programme will be organised.
Religious leaders such as Siddarama Swamiji of Sanehalli and Kabirananda Swamiji are expected to attend, alongside environmental campaigner A.T. Ramaswamy.
Academic impact
Due to the bandh, private schools have declared a holiday to ensure the safety of students. Koppal University has postponed its postgraduate first semester examinations. Officials clarified that SSLC preparatory examinations will proceed as planned.
Authorities are monitoring the situation to maintain law and order during the bandh.
