Officials begin investigating safety concerns.
A tragic incident in Tumakuru district has left a family devastated after a pillar from a Nandini dairy building collapsed on a schoolboy who was playing near the premises.
The incident took place in Belegihalli village of Chikkanayakanahalli taluk. The deceased has been identified as Dhanush, a fourth grade student at the local government higher primary school.
According to preliminary information, three children had been playing near the dairy building before the accident. A decorative rope had reportedly been tied to one of the pillars, and the children were using it as a makeshift swing.
The pillar suddenly gave way and fell on Dhanush. He suffered severe head injuries and died at the scene. Two other children who were nearby reportedly escaped with minor injuries.
Local residents have raised questions about the condition of the structure. They claim that the pillar had already developed cracks and that no repairs had been carried out despite the apparent damage. Some residents have also alleged that poor construction and inadequate maintenance may have contributed to the accident.
The incident occurred near the school, where children regularly move around the area. The collapse has therefore raised wider concerns about whether ageing or damaged structures near educational institutions are being properly inspected and secured.
Following the incident, officials from the revenue and education departments reportedly submitted a complaint to the police. Authorities are expected to examine the condition of the building and determine how the damaged pillar remained accessible to children.
Senior officials and local leaders visited the site after the accident. Former minister J C Madhuswamy, Tahsildar Mamatha, Block Education Officer Kantaraj, Tumakuru Milk Union director Shivaprakash, Superintendent of Police Ashok K V and Child Rights Commission director Satyanarayana Shetty were among those who reportedly visited the location.
The incident has triggered grief in the village while also putting the spotlight on the need for regular safety inspections of public and dairy infrastructure, particularly structures located close to schools.
