Banking services are expected to be affected in several parts of the country today as employees of nationalised banks observe a strike over various demands, including the introduction of a five day working week.

The strike is being organised under the leadership of the Indian Banks Association, with branches of 12 nationalised banks expected to remain closed. Around 350 branches are reportedly affected, while nearly 800 employees have extended their support by staying away from work. Customers could therefore face interruptions in routine banking services.

On the international front, Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in New Delhi to participate in the BRICS summit. His visit has also brought attention to discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Defence cooperation, energy and expanding transactions using local currencies are among the issues expected to feature in the bilateral talks.

Meanwhile, BESCOM has recorded a significant improvement in its financial performance. The electricity distribution company posted an annual profit of Rs 293.62 crore for the financial year 2025 to 2026, marking its return to the profit path after seven years.

In Tumakuru district, police have registered a complaint after a threatening letter demanding Rs 5 lakh was found at a farm shed in Pavagada. The letter, written in Telugu, was reportedly signed in the name of Comrade Devanna and threatened consequences if the money was not paid.

The letter allegedly demanded money in connection with expenses related to a case involving a person named Venkatesh. Police are investigating the possibility that the threat was created by Venkatesh himself. The incident has been described locally as a suspected fake Naxal threat, and the Pavagada police are looking into the matter.

A separate public grievance meeting in the Dakshina Kannada region saw residents raise strong concerns over repeated electricity interruptions during the monsoon. Consumers complained that their problems were not being addressed promptly and called for vacant positions, including lineman posts, to be filled without delay.

The meeting was chaired by Assistant Engineer Jayadev. Representatives including Purneish Malebail of the traders association and M V Jayaram were also present during the discussion. Residents used the meeting to highlight the difficulties caused by unreliable power supply during the rainy season.

In Raichur district, a 26 year old man died in an accident while a large Ganesh idol was being transported. The incident occurred at Attanur when an electrical wire came into contact with the approximately 15 foot tall idol being brought from Hyderabad.

The young man, identified as Prema from Sirwar, reportedly suffered a serious electrical injury. He died while being taken to hospital, according to the information available in the report. Sirwar police visited the location and began an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Students in Kerur, Bagalkot district, also staged a protest over inadequate bus services. Students said they were struggling to reach schools and colleges on time because there were not enough buses operating on the route.

The protest took place near the Kerur bus stand, where students blocked the Hubballi Vijayapura highway. The road blockade resulted in a long traffic queue, with congestion extending for several kilometres. The protesters reportedly refused to leave until officials arrived and assured them that steps would be taken to address the shortage.

In Tamil Nadu, a construction accident in Vellore has claimed the lives of three workers. The roof of a church that was still under construction reportedly collapsed suddenly, trapping workers at the site.

Eleven other workers sustained serious injuries in the incident. They were taken to hospitals in Vellore and neighbouring Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh for emergency treatment. Authorities are examining the circumstances that led to the structural collapse.
