Terror suspect Dr. Ahmed brutally assaulted inside Sabarmati Jail over ricin attack plot
Ahmedabad: In a dramatic incident inside Gujarat’s Sabarmati Central Jail, terror suspect Dr. Ahmed—accused of plotting large-scale terror attacks across India using the deadly chemical ricin—was brutally assaulted by fellow inmates.
The attack took place despite Dr. Ahmed being housed in a high-security cell, officials confirmed. Dr. Ahmed, who was arrested in Hyderabad and later shifted to Gujarat, had reportedly drawn the anger of several inmates after news of his alleged anti-national activities became known inside the jail.
According to sources, the inmates, infuriated by the charges against him, barged into his high-security enclosure and beat him severely.
Initial investigations suggest that the assault was so intense that Dr. Ahmed’s life would have been in danger if jail officials had not intervened on time. Guards posted outside the cell rushed in after hearing the commotion and Dr. Ahmed’s loud cries for help. He was pulled away from the attacking inmates and immediately shifted to a hospital with serious injuries.
Dr. Ahmed, who studied medicine in China, had reportedly failed the mandatory MCI screening test required to practice in India. According to the FIR, he had planned to extract ricin—a highly potent toxin—from castor seeds, which are normally used to produce castor oil. The substance is lethal even in minute quantities, and investigators believe the accused intended to use it for orchestrating terror attacks across multiple locations in the country.
The jail assault has prompted an internal inquiry, and authorities are probing how inmates in a high-security zone gained access to the accused. Meanwhile, security around Dr. Ahmed has been tightened to prevent further incidents.
