Six-member gang busted for ₹5 lakh theft; police driver exposed as mastermind

Haveri: Hirekerur police have cracked a major theft case with the arrest of six people, including a police station driver who allegedly planned the crime in his wife’s native village.

The incident took place in Hale Nidunegilu village of Hirekerur taluk. Those arrested are Bagalkote residents Raghavendra, Vijay, Mallesh, Kantesh, Nagesh and police constable-driver Pradeep Nayak.

The burglary occurred on January 19 at the farmhouse of Mallanagouda Patil. Patil had stored money and ornaments at his house for upcoming construction work. Taking advantage of this, the accused targeted his home.

According to police investigation, Pradeep Nayak had gathered all details about the victim’s property while visiting the village. Pretending to be on official night duty, he passed on crucial information to his criminal associates.

Following his “sketch”, the gang entered the farmhouse late at night by breaking the rear door. They stole 90 grams of gold, half a kilogram of silver items and around ₹5 lakh in cash before escaping.

After the theft came to light, a case was registered at Hirekerur police station. A special team was formed to track the culprits. During the probe, investigators grew suspicious of Nayak’s activities and call records. Further questioning exposed his direct involvement.

Police arrested all six accused and recovered a portion of the stolen items. Officials said more recoveries are expected as interrogation continues.

Local residents expressed shock that a police employee himself was involved in organizing the crime. Senior officers have said departmental action will also be initiated against Pradeep Nayak for breaching trust and duty.

The successful detection of the case has been appreciated, but the involvement of a policeman has raised serious questions about misuse of power.
