Sexual harassment complaint against Basava Jaya Mruthyunjaya Swamiji; counter extortion case filed

Bengaluru: A woman from Bengaluru has lodged a complaint with the State Women’s Commission alleging physical, mental and sexual harassment by Basava Jaya Mruthyunjaya Swamiji, triggering a high-profile controversy.
In her complaint, the woman has accused the seer of threatening to leak her private videos on social media and forcing her to cooperate sexually. “He has been blackmailing me using my personal videos and pressuring me for sexual favours. I seek protection and justice,” the complainant stated in her petition to the commission.
Taking note of the allegations, the Women’s Commission has written to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru South division, and the Superintendent of Police in Vijayapura district, directing them to investigate the matter and ensure the safety of the complainant. “The case must be examined thoroughly and necessary action should be taken to protect the victim,” the commission said.
However, the controversy has taken a twist with the swamiji filing a counter-complaint at the Vijayapura Rural Police Station. Denying all allegations, he has accused the woman and three others of attempting to extort ₹3 crore from him.
“They demanded ₹3 crore and threatened to defame me in media and social platforms if I refused. They also warned of filing a false rape case to tarnish my image,” the swamiji alleged in his complaint.
He further claimed that the woman had approached him two to three years ago along with her relatives, seeking financial assistance for a foundation supporting poor and orphaned children. “I had only assured to help connect her with donors. Since I did not give money, they started harassing me,” he said.
The seer also alleged that he was physically attacked earlier this year. “On February 11, my vehicle was stopped, and I was threatened for money. When I refused, they damaged my car and created a ruckus,” he claimed.
Police have registered the complaint and initiated an inquiry into both the allegations and counter-allegations. Officials said further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
