Rumours of oil price surge trigger panic buying in Bhatkal

Bhatkal : Rumours linking a possible spike in fuel prices to escalating tension s between Iran, Israel and the United States have triggered panic buying of petrol in coastal Karnataka, particularly in Bhatkal.

Unverified messages claiming that the ongoing geopolitical tensions could disrupt global crude oil supply led to widespread anxiety among residents. Fearing a sudden price hike or supply shortage, people rushed to petrol bunks across Bhatkal town to stock up on fuel.

Long queues of vehicles were seen outside major petrol pumps from early morning. Within a few hours, petrol stocks were reportedly exhausted at more than three fuel stations in the town. Apart from filling fuel tanks of their vehicles, several individuals were also seen carrying plastic cans and storing petrol in bulk.

The situation forced many residents to travel to neighbouring towns such as Honnavar and Kundapura in search of fuel, after local outlets ran dry due to heavy demand.

Officials clarified that there is currently no disruption in fuel supply and no official announcement regarding any immediate price hike. Authorities urged the public not to fall prey to rumours circulating on social media and messaging platforms.

They warned that unnecessary hoarding could create an artificial shortage and inconvenience the general public. Efforts are underway to normalise supply at affected petrol bunks, and police are monitoring the situation to prevent crowding and ensure order.

The incident once again highlights how misinformation during international crises can trigger avoidable panic at the local level, impacting daily life and essential services.
