New Delhi/Imphal : Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), stressed the pivotal role of Hindus in sustaining civilization, claiming that without the Hindu community, the world could not exist.
Addressing a gathering in Manipur, his first visit to the northeastern state after recent ethnic tensions, Bhagwat described Hindu society as eternal and positioned India as a civilization surpassing the likes of Greece, Egypt, and Rome.
“Every nation has witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations. Greece, Egypt, and Rome, all these great civilizations have vanished from the face of the earth. But our civilization endures, and that is why we remain relevant today,” Bhagwat said.
During his address, he highlighted the Hindu community as a global custodian of religion and morality. He further stated that, historically, all inhabitants of India share a common ancestry, underlining that in his view, the country has never been without Hindus.
Bhagwat also emphasized economic self-reliance, stating that for a nation to be strong, it must achieve complete economic independence. “Strength begins with economic capacity. Our economy must be fully self-reliant. We cannot depend on anyone,” he said, noting that military and intellectual power are equally essential for nation-building.
The RSS chief drew attention to historical struggles, citing the decline of Naxalism and India’s independence movement as examples of societal resilience. He underscored the importance of collective social will, highlighting that challenges can be overcome when communities unite with determination.
Bhagwat’s remarks come amid heightened national debates over cultural identity, economic self-sufficiency, and the RSS’s role in shaping public discourse. His statements were made against the backdrop of global economic pressures, including recent U.S. tariffs on Indian imports, prompting calls for stronger domestic production initiatives.
While the speech primarily focused on cultural and civilizational continuity, it also reflected the RSS’s broader ideological vision of a self-reliant, Hindu-centric India.
