Private sewer cleaning operators must register with BWSSB, warns chairman

Bengaluru: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has mandated compulsory registration for all private agencies and vehicles engaged in cleaning private manholes and sewage treatment plants (STPs) across Bengaluru, setting March 7 as the deadline for compliance.
The order has been issued in accordance with Sections 84 and 88 of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Act 1964. BWSSB Chairman Dr Ramprasad Manohar has instructed engineering officials at all levels to strictly implement the existing notifications and ensure that no unregistered agency continues operations.
Vehicle owners and agencies handling sewerage cleaning in commercial buildings, apartment complexes, group housing projects and private layouts have been directed to register at the divisional level without fail. Authorities have been tasked with identifying such operators and bringing them under the regulatory framework before the deadline.
The Board has categorically stated that maintenance of STPs and manholes must be entrusted only to BWSSB-registered agencies. In case of any accident arising from engagement of unauthorised or unregistered personnel, liability will fall squarely on the respective commercial property owners, residential complex managements or Resident Welfare Associations.
Officials have also been directed to circulate notices to all concerned establishments and associations, ensuring immediate awareness and compliance.
The decision underscores BWSSB’s intent to enforce safety norms, streamline private sanitation services and strengthen oversight over sewage infrastructure management in the city.
