Magadi MLA HC Balakrishna Slams Tahsildar Over Delayed Public Works, Video Sparks Debate on Official Accountability

Ramanagara: A heated exchange at a public grievance meeting in Magadi Taluk has triggered widespread discussion on administrative accountability after MLA HC Balakrishna sharply reprimanded Tahsildar DP Sharath Kumar over alleged delays in addressing citizens’ concerns.

The incident, which took place on Wednesday evening at the Magadi Taluk Panchayat office, was captured on video and has since gone viral on social media. The confrontation unfolded when a complainant informed the MLA that officials were repeatedly neglecting and delaying routine public works, particularly those related to land records and farmer services.

Visibly angered by the allegations, Balakrishna openly criticised the Tahsildar in front of the gathering, accusing him of failing in his duties and causing distress to the public. Addressing the officer, the MLA warned that negligence by officials ultimately reflects on elected representatives as well.

He remarked that if public grievances remain unresolved, both officials and politicians would face public anger. Stressing the importance of accountability, Balakrishna proposed installing a complaint box in the office, to be opened every month in the presence of senior officials.

He said that officers named in public complaints would be required to explain their inaction directly to citizens during review meetings. The MLA questioned the work ethic of young officers, asking whether they understood their responsibilities toward the public.

He cited the example of late IAS officer DK Ravi, recalling how people mourned him because of his integrity and dedication. Drawing a sharp contrast, Balakrishna asked whether officials who harass citizens would earn similar respect.

Throughout the outburst, Tahsildar Sharath Kumar reportedly remained silent, responding only with nods and refraining from arguing back. Sources present at the meeting said the officer chose not to escalate the situation further.

This is not the first time the MLA has publicly criticised revenue officials. About two months ago, during a Janata Samparka meeting at the taluk office, Balakrishna had similarly reprimanded the Tahsildar and the Assistant Director of Land Records, accusing them of failing farmers and inviting public resentment.

While supporters of the MLA argue that his strong words reflect public frustration with bureaucratic delays, critics say such confrontations undermine administrative decorum and demoralise officers. The incident has once again brought into focus the tense relationship between elected representatives and bureaucracy, as well as the urgent need for efficient delivery of public services at the grassroots level.
